At the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) and the University of Montpellier III, Valerie produced pioneering research work on Virtual and Augmented Reality and cinematic arts. She served as Executive Board Member at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), leading research on virtual environments at the Sorbonne's lab IDEAT. A Tenured Associate Professor of Cinema and Interactive Arts, she designed and taught programs spearheading the development of post-digital aesthetics studies. The courses she delivered included "Post-Digital Cinema Aesthetics", "Interactive Media Semiotics", "Transmedia Storytelling", "Philosophy of Virtual Worlds", "Sociology of Hypermedia", "Empathy-Building Design", "Archeology of the Future", and "Arts & Cyberculture". She also taught applied courses in video, videogame design, VFX, CGI, photography, and HCI design.
In 2011, Valerie embraced entrepreneurship by founding, in Oceania, a strategy firm centered on inclusive innovation. She was commissioned by the President of New Caledonia, her native island, to serve as a Government-appointed Innovation Strategy Principal Consultant, advising the President and the Minister for Public Finance and Digital Economy. She devised forward-leaning public policy reforms supportive of digital innovation and cultural inclusiveness, built international strategic partnerships, engineered $MM research and education projects, and transferred high-value technology to the public sector. She designed the Superior School of Digital Media Design, the Audiovisual and Digital Innovation Support Fund, the Territorial Support Plan for the Creative Industries, and engineered the Creative Industries Promotion Agency of New Caledonia.
After fostering digital innovation in the South Pacific, she relocated to the U.S. where she has occupied several positions in San Francisco, such as Director of Experience Design and Director of Interactive Innovation at Evoke Giant, the largest healthcare advertising and marketing agency on the West Coast, before joining, as Chief Innovation Officer, the latest startup of Ancestry founder Paul Allen to develop a lifelong learning marketplace.
The CEO of Intelligent Story, Valerie advises and educates leaders on responsible and inclusive AI transformation. She is a Founding Editorial Board Member of the Springer Journal of AI & Ethics and a contributing expert to the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems. Valerie regularly serves as Ph.D. Jury Member and expert evaluator for academic research and tenure assessments in the U.S. and Canada. She is currently writing a book on Ethics and Artificial Intelligence to be published in 2021.
A multi-awarded underwater photographer and designer, Valerie's interactive video and photography work has been exhibited globally in museums and art galleries.
Born in New Caledonia to a multiracial family, Valerie is a longtime vegan who actively supports human and animal rights and a passionate environmentalist.
